What is landscape photography?

Definition of landscape photography is actually different for different perception. Sometimes landscape photography is taking photographs of huge unending nature and other times microscopic species.

Types of landscape photography

The scenery is the most important part of landscapes. Generally, people or city sky or animals photographs don’t fall under landscapes. Here are the three major types of landscapes.

  1. Representational landscapes: The most natural style of landscape photography is representational. It’s all about what you see is what you get in your mind. No artificial constituents are added. Special attention is given in lighting, framing, and composition of photographs.
  2. Abstract landscapes: In abstract landscape importance is given to the graphics design than a realistic representation of the observation. The photographer may use some lighting techniques to highlight a particular area within the landscape itself.
  3. Impressionistic landscapes: It is totally based on the impression of the viewer rather than the realistic view.

What is Mobile Photography?

Mobile photography is an art of taking photographs using smartphones.

From the time people incline towards more social media image sharing, the camera becomes the key selling point of smartphones. Companies are manufacturing mobiles with triple camera, Bokeh mode, AI selfie mode, Telephoto lenses, etc.

Types of Mobile photography:

CAMERA SETTINGS:

Any mobile’s camera from 2017 is good enough to capture. But what makes the difference? Someone is getting amazing photographs when another one just can’t.

Well, it depends on two basic things, Framing and post-processing.

Framing

Framing is necessary for any photo, it is the way you want people to see your photo but it is very distinctive and it takes a lot of time to understand framing and improve. Here are some tricks to follow to make images better.

  • Symmetry: Symmetry brings more beauty. To find symmetry just turn on the gridlines on your camera. Follow the rule of thirds, Place the subject on one of the intersections between horizontal and vertical lines to attract the eye.
  • Taking shots from a different angle: Taking the same photograph from a different angle makes every image unique from others.
  • Background and Foreground: Most of the camera phone has the feature of blurring the background and focusing on the foreground. It makes the object placed in the foreground more beautiful.

Always shoot in HDR mode: HDR mode (High dynamic range) captures three shots one under exposed and one normal and another overexposed and combine them together to form the best photo.

Now coming to the second part, post-processing.

Get free consultation!

Post-processing

Some people think it’s manipulating or cheating but it’s not like that, as most of the time, cameras are not able to take the exact image of what we see. Hence post-processing is important in mobile photography.

There are a ton of apps available. One of the best is Goggle’s snap seed as it is simple to use but loaded with powerful features. Let’s take a look at how it helps.

  • Brightness: Adjusting brightness can make the image more bright or dark when it is under or overexposed.
  • Contrast: Increasing the contrast increase the separation between bright and dark parts.
  • Saturation: Increasing the saturation increase the parting between colours.
  • Highlights: Highlights brightened the specific part of the picture.
  • Warmth: It generally controls the temperature of the image.

Lighting

No matter which mobile camera you are using lighting is the most crucial part of mobile photography. Ensure natural lights are coming during photography, be it any lamp, window or direct sunlight.

Macro photography

Nature is not only about big species, animals but also it includes small objects, and nothing is more satisfying than to take a print of a macro animal or insect. However, it requires great photographic skills to reach near space of it, which is normally so small to a naked eye.

Here are some useful tricks before you begin.

What is Macro photography?

Macro photography is taking photographs of tiny species. To take a sharp image of a tiny species requires the lens to be placed much closer. Just think no special lenses or macro tube is required for macro photography.

Types of Macro Photography

According to shooting style, there are different types of macro photography.

Floral Macros: Capturing macro shots of flowers. It can be 2:1 or 3:1, which means the image, will be 2 or 3 times greater than the actual size of the object.
Object Macros: Taking shots of tiny object. It may or may not be a living being. Example: Water bubbles, tree leaves, Insects, etc.
Human Macros: Different parts of a human being can also be taken in macro photography, like macro of eyes, lips, etc.

Equipment used in Macro Photography

Check out the list of accessories required for Macro Photography

Camera:Macro cameras are designed especially for macro photography. These cameras are able to capture tiny items at a size greater or equal to 1:1 ratio. The minimum requirement of the aperture is from F/3.3 to F/6.6. Normal focusing range is 60 cm. Mirrorless, Crop sensor camera will be preferred.

Grab some amazing camera essentials.

Lens: Make use of the following lenses to improve your Macro Photography.

Macro lens: With the help of a macro lens you can focus around 12 inches or more. Manual focus is preferred as autofocus can’t focus much closer.
Zoom lens: Zoom lens is always dependent on the focal length. It helps you to focus on the subject. Some zoom lens is also included with macro lens.
Lensbaby Velvet 56: It is a special lens by Lensbaby, which has a small depth of field, which is ideal for macro photography.
Extension tube: 12 mm, 22 mm and 36 mm usually these three ranges of extension tubes are used in Macro Photography, which will make your lens get closer to the subject.
Close up filters: Many filters are available in lenses, which helps to get the subject more closely. One of them is a+5 from B+W.
Mobile: Mobile can be useful equipment for macro photography as many companies are manufacturing smartphone with good macro lenses.

Settings:

Set your camera before shooting.

Aperture:

To maximize the focus distance set the aperture to F/16 or smaller.
To minimize the distance set the aperture to F/2.8, F/4.
Always focus on the subjected part of the object to get a sharp image.

Shutter speed:

With flash: You can set it to your fastest sync speed (minimum 1/250 sec) to block ambient light. It will not affect flash as flash speed will be less than 1/250 sec
Without flash: 1/400 sec is recommended reducing a blurred image.

ISO:

With flash: Set the flash around ¼ powersand keep the ISO range of 100 to 800. You will get the best output.
Without flash: If you don’t have a flash then only ISO can brighten your image. Set ISO in autofocus to get the sharp image.

Suggestions from the expert!

Lighting:

Flash is not much used at close-ups. The quality of light is important. Ensure bright sunlight or good flash head is available, Also, use diffusers e.g. umbrella with a tripod to diffuse direct sunlight as it helps to prevent reflection.

How photography can contribute to self improvement?

July 21 , 2019 Bisakha Datta
How photography can contribute to self improvement?
How photography can contribute to self improvement?

“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.” – Bruce Lee

To be a good human being it is utmost important, to be honest to yourself, have faith in yourself and be yourself. Following your passion always improves your personality. In other words, it helps in self-improvement. Photography is one such passion which improves the person in you. For instance, it is not only about how beautiful a picture you take but how beautiful frame your mind can find. In the long run, a good photographer is no the one who excels in framing the picture but one who frames her/himself best.
Listed below are 20 such personality traits which gets improved along with the photography skills.

Observational

The utmost necessary personality trait in a good photographer is her/her observation power. As a result the more observant you are the more details you capture.

Communicative

I used to be a very shy person. So when I decided on following my passion as my profession people were apprehensive. They thought how a shy girl like me will succeed in such a vocal profession. With time I understood the best way to get the desired photographs is how good you communicate with your subject. Now I can make the cheetahs of Maasai Mara National Reserve to pose for me.

Nature Loving

Love for nature comes from within. A good photographer develops an eye to see the surroundings in a way no one can. So be it her fury or blessings nature is the best subject a photographer can get.

Positive mindset

See good to get the good. Photography transforms lives, not only of the subject but of the photographer her/himself. You can get the best out of the frame only when seeing the best through you lens.

More technical

As technology develops camera and paraphernalia are becoming more and more user friendly. DSLR cameras are common place now. However, every person who is handling a DSLR is a good photographer. Good photography requires not only instincts but also the knowledge of what you are using and editing too. One needs to go in-depth with the technicalities of the camera and working knowledge of editing software like Photoshop.

Knowledgeable

This point follows the more technicality point. The more you gather knowledge about the photography the more resources you will have in your hand to try something different, something unique. A good photographer fortifies himself with better understanding.

Traveler

Traveling as a photographer is not only traveling for vacation but to have an eye for every detail around while you roam. Traveling can be next door or to as far away place. It is what you around as a photographer when you travel.

Teacher

When we teach other about photography we learn more as a photographer. As a result the more we teach the more we gain awareness about the detail. Thus good photography helps in self improvement of the photographer as a teacher.

Writer

Now-a-days we find so many photographers maintaining personal blogs on tricks and tips about photography. Others are writing books or simply maintaining journals. Whichever way they resort to the need to store and share what you know about photography is making them writers within their own capabilities.

Motivational Speaker

Therapeutic photography has acted as a miracle to many in healing them from anxiety, depression and other mental anomalies. A good photographer becomes a motivational speaker on sharing how photography helps her/him to forget about the mundane life and find a whole new world.

Increase concentration

Sometimes a good shot requires a lifetime. So one who aims at becoming a successful photographer need to be patient. Wildlife photographers perhaps have the most of it. One single shot may become a masterpiece, but behind it lies hours and hours of lying down at a hidden location and waiting for that best one.

Brave

Passion for photography makes you brave. I went for a solo trip to Kenya for my love of wildlife photography. Passion for photography taught me to be brave enough to try out a solo adventure.

Know yourself

Following ones passion always reveals the “I” part hidden within us. Photography is one such passion. I started my career as a graphic designer; however, it is the love for photography which made me understand who I am.

Role model

When I started off as a photographer there were not many women who were following this profession. But down the years things changed a lot. I see so many young talents, both girls and boys equally, coming to me asking for advice or classes to learn photography. I enjoy the role model status which I treasure the most.

Enjoy Yourself

One can only succeed when one enjoys in what they do. Make your passion your profession and you enjoy what you do to the core. Things never become mundane.

Creative Thinker

A good photographer transforms a simple subject to something extraordinary. That is creative thinking. One needs to think beyond the box to get that perfect shot from humble things around.

Explorer

For good photography traveling is not enough, a good photographer explores. She/he tries to learn new things from the surroundings itself.

Make life better for others

Photography is not only about self improvement. A simple frame means a lot to the ones who value the same. In this way a good photographer becomes a part of the life of many in a noble way.

Patient

Photography teaches us many things. As already discussed to get a good one needs to communicate with the subject, be it people, nature, bird or wild animal. The experience is not always an easy or pleasant one. At one time even good photographers are at the verge of giving up but then we remember it’s all about patience. If we are patient enough that perfect shot will always be our final destination.

Spiritual

Good photography changes the perspective at which we see our life. For example, with nature photography, one may feel the joy of every single moment in their life. Every second of our life becomes valuable. You will realize how trivial our problems are compared to the vastness of the universe. As a result it contributes to one’s self-improvement at the spiritual level.

The traditional music of Maasai Mara is composed of beat and vocal chorus melodies led by the main vocalist (‘olaranyani’) who sings the melody. Maasaies perform a traditional competitive jumping dance called Adumu. This dance is not only meant to proof their warrior power but also a process of finding their life partners. Maasai men either stand in a row or make a circle; one of them enters inside and jumps. Others stand in a row to see who jumped highest straight in the air with hands at their sides. The highest competitor is given the chance to marry the girl of his choice.
